Television and radio stations, newspapers, internet sites, and advertisements notified the public of the impending digital TV transition that was set to take place on February 17, 2009. Although everyone was given ample time and fair warning of what would happen on that date, there were still millions of people across the United States that were not ready for this transition. The majority of the people were ready, but there were some who could either not afford to purchase a converter box or who were on the waiting list to receive their coupon from the DTV Coupon Program.

One of the reasons why some people were not ready was because they simply could not afford it. For those who have not been greatly affected by the declining economy, spending anywhere from $40 to $80 is not a big deal. For the 7% who had become unemployed, however, making ends meet and keeping a roof over their self and their families was already difficult enough, and they couldn't afford a converter box.

The TV Converter Box Coupon Program promised up to two coupons valued at $40 per household, which expired 90 days from the date that it was mailed out. The coupons were redeemable at any participating retailer. The coupon program requires that the applicant either download and mail in or fill out the application on their website.

This was a godsend for those who had financial difficulties and was living paycheck to paycheck. At some point during the program, however, it was reported the program reached its financial limits and needed additional government funding to continue. If you visit their site, you will find a notice proving that report true, so it is important to act on this right away. Although the program has reached its financial limit, it is waiting on funding or other coupons that were mailed out and had not been redeemed to expire. Once money has been replenished in their account, they will continue to mail out these coupons on a first-come first-served basis.

President Barack Obama realized that many were going to be impacted negatively with this transition and proposed the DTV Delay Act. The House approved it a couple of weeks ago, and the DTV transition date has been moved to June 12, 2009. Since there are still roughly two million who have not received their coupons yet, this extra time should be more than enough so they will not be affected when the transition day arrives.
